A really brief commentary on the highs and lows of NBC’s Olympic Coverage

During the Olympics NBC has gotten a lot of heat for a multitude of things-not being clear about what is airing when, making live streams difficult to access, focusing too much on “personal story lines, and saving events that have already been decided for prime-time airing.

Now let me first admit to some bias. I enjoy watching Olympic events. However, I’m not passionate about them. If I were I’d keep up with those events during the interim which I do not. I don’t care enough about who wins in the Olympics to sweat about real time viewings. Further, I’m really good at missing information including competition results. I mean, I had no idea the Dark Knight Rises came out until 3 days after. If you can’t tell, I’m not pressed about much not involving the following three letters: N.F.L.

I think that many fellow Americans share my enthusiastic ambivalence when it comes to the Olympics. That’s why I think it’s fine that NBC chose to save big events for prime time when most of America isn’t out running errands or being at work. The live streams should be better accessible and this will be a learning experience for NBC as people have complained about having to put in log in information into live streams in order to watch. And when they were finally successful it was choppy. I should correct my previous statement-it’s not just a learning experience for NBC it’s a learning experience for everybody.

Jaguars New “night club” Locker Room and why new owner wants some home games in London

Let’s start off with the best part…the Jaguars new locker room (courtesy of its new owner Shad Kahn) is SWANK AS HELL! I mean truly amazing. Kahn really has some good taste. Let’s get into it.

The main area has a big Jaguars logo on the ceiling. There are also lots of leather chairs. If you’ve ever been to the strip club King of Diamonds in Miami this design will look familiar to you.

The Best Way To Keep Up With Medals Won in the Olympics in Real Time

If you want to keep up with the Olympics MedalCount.com is the best web site to do so. Well, the best I’ve seen so far. The site lists all of the participating countries and the medals they’ve won and where they rank in terms of the number of medals won. If you double click on the “x” on the right of a country’s box the site will move that box up top as part of your “watch list” aka the countries you care most about. As you can see, I’ve put America, Brazil, Spain and France as my countries to watch. If you’re really into knowing the winners in real time you can turn on audio alerts so that your computer makes a sound when a new medals are reported. There’s also a handy schedule of events to the right.

NFL releases chart of player arrests - Lions outpace other teams, DUIs most common offense

Aaron Berry was cut from the Lions today for breaking the golden rule-a man’s talent must outweigh his foolishness. Berry was popped for simple assault but drug abuse offenses are far more common than violent ones. Berry received his own DUI charge last month.

In a show of something akin to transparency the NFL has released a list of NFL players arrested thus far in 2012. I have mixed feelings about the list being released with the biggest gripe being that no context was given. I think when you release a list like this you should mention how the NFL stacks up vs. other leagues and the general public, and whether there has been an increase or decrease in arrests compared to this time last year. On the other hand, I suppose you can argue for information to be “posted without comment” to allow folks to draw their own conclusions.

The Detroit Lions have already been the talk of the off season so this list will reveal nothing new.  The biggest thing I took away from the list is the number of DUI/DWIs (11) which were by far the most common offense with marijuana possession being second. I’ve blogged about this before but athletes who suffer from substance abuse are not uncommon.
