Indianapolis Colts Dwight Freeney talks moving to outside linebacker — plus video of his intense workouts
Now that Chuck Pagano has taken over coaching duties for the Indianapolis Colts he is installing a defense very similar to what he did with the Baltimore Ravens. The biggest part of it? Switching a team that has played in a 4-3 foreverandaday to a 3-4 defense and moving two of it’s prized Defensive Ends to Outside Linebacker. Now we get to see what Freeney and Mathis have when it comes to all facets — covering receivers near the line, dropping back more on the run, in addition to rushing the passer. According to Freeney, he still expects to line up on the defensive line a lot but playing a hybrid role lets them switch up things to confuse the other team’s OL.

At the 10:02 mark in the video below, Freeney talks about changing his workouts and perhaps dropping a little bit of weight in preparation for his new role. The video is a little over 34 minutes but if you’re interested in finding a few new moves you may consider watching the whole thing. I love what he was doing passing the medicine ball around his legs. I’m going try that even though I have childlike hands.
