No I Will Not Be Reading Your “Mock Draft”
This is just a quick blog post to let people know how much I despise mock drafts. No, seriously. I really hate mock drafts. I think they’re pointless, especially when web sites do 2 or 3 or even 4 or 5 of them in the weeks leading up to the draft. One of the biggest things that bothers me about mock drafts is that most sites don’t make the purpose of the mock clear.
Some mock drafts are based on who a particular writer thinks a team should grab based on fit. Other mock drafts simply rank the best players and pair them with teams based on the team’s pick in the draft only straying from ranking by ability when a team clearly deep at that position. Other drafts stick completely to ranking guys in order of ability. Some do a combination of all three. But most are pointless still because GMs are thinking things that we never think.
There are some teams who will make bold decisions based on need and there are other teams that make it clear that their intention is to take the best player available regardless of fit. Most mock drafts do not account for minor trades up and down cause those are the kinds we can’t possibly know about in advance.
And even the sites that make their mock draft strategy clear hold no interest for me. I guess its satisfying for writers to see how close they came to getting it right but what’s in it for me the reader?
That being said I will take a look at some reviews or scouting reports of players. But to be honest I’m really only interested in reading full reports from Mike Mayock and Greg Cosell though I will glance at others here and there.
