What I’ve been listening to lately – old and new stuff
Sometimes I just feel like sharing what I’ve been listening to as of late –old stuff and new stuff.
Marques Houston — Naked *** I love this album and every time I go back and listen to it I like it more. I wonder who CornerBoyz are producing for now. My favorites are “All because of you” and “I wasn’t ready.” There’s also a funny song on there that isn’t meant to be funny. It’s called “Married” where Marques sings the typical man’s perspective when he doesn’t want to marry a girl. It’s a great song though.
Justin Bieber – Believe *** Yes, we all have Bieber Fever. I know right! I heard Justin Timberlake was working on a new album and I wonder if the Biebs having a similar quality sound has anything to do with it. Just a thought. Anyway, Believe is a good album that @Gordehh put me on to.
Chris Brown – Fortune ***My experience with Fortune is just like the experience I had when Justin Timberlake’s Justified came out. Every week I had a different favorite song. When Fortune first came out, “Turn up the music” was my favorite. Then I fell in love with “Don’t judge me” then it was “Stuck on Stupid” then it was “Biggest fan” now it’s “Sweet Love.” I wonder what my next fave will be.

T.I. – I’m Serious ***None of T.I.’s albums ever get old to me. I just happen to have gone back to I’m Serious and rediscovered “Do It” and “What’s yo name.” Brings me back to a simpler time in my life and a time where T.I.’s accent was even heavier.
Teyana Taylor – The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor *** So ready for this girl to come out with an album!!!! Her mixtape deserves attention. My favorite song on the mixtape is “Complicated” where she really likes this guy but isn’t ready to be in a relationship. “DUI” with Fabolous and Jadakiss is also good. I like the whole thing so just go listen to it.
Wale – More About Nothing *** Wale’s antics on twitter kinda turned me off toward his music. But…I knew he was talented. A few years ago, I went to a Ryan Leslie show at 9:30 club in DC and Ryan brought Wale out. I had no idea who he was (neither did a lot of people in audience) but he was still able to get the crowd hype and he sounded great. All you need to know about this mixtape: “The Posse Cut”!! Okay there’s other stuff too but “The Posse Cut” gets put on repeat. Right before it comes on there’s an interlude with OKC Thunder’s Kevin Durant talking shit for a minute and a half.
Talib Kweli – Dub Kweli *** In the past I admit I haven’t listened much to Kweli but I love this mixtape. I can put it on play and just let it rock out. I can’t even say I know the names of any songs.
Asa – Beautiful Imperfection *** This album is similar to Dub Kweli in that I don’t know the name of any songs but I love this album. When I really need to buckle down and write…I immediately put this on. Asa has a beautiful voice, good lyrics, and a versatile but sweet sound.
A few songs I’m on:
Adele – Melt my heart to stone *** I’m trying to learn to the acoustic version on my guitar. This is from her “19” album not “21”.”
Lady Antebellum – American Honey ***Nobody can tell me this song isn’t about me. Sometimes I cry when I hear it.
Cassie – Official Girl ***This song made it seem like there was still hope for Cassie’s non singing ass post-Ryan Leslie. Everything I’ve heard from her after this song is GARBAGE though. I swear Timbaland is a fucking miracle worker. I love this song cause it has lyrics for days. I like songs that tell a story. I wish R&B had more of that and less slanging and banging. I also wish R&B had less rap but Wayne did drop a clever and appropriate verse on it. This song should have gotten more attention.
Terius Nash (The Dream) – Long Gone ***Terius Nash cannot sing worth a damn but he knows how to put together a song. I’m not in love with his 1977 mixtape but this song goes.
Lil Mo f. Fabolous – 4ever *** Back in the day I was begging for Mo and Fab to do an album together. But it never happened. Mo has an amazing voice and her songs were relatable. They made a good team. This song still knocks.
Imran Kahn f. Lucky – Ni Nachleh *** This is one of my favorite Indian dance hall songs.
Day 26 – Made Love Lately *** I miss Day 26. This song newer song is consistent with their sound. If you don’t have their two studio albums you should really get on it. Beautiful songs for real.
Hakim – El-Kalam Dah Kbeer *** Hakim is my favorite Egyptian pop singer and puts out a shit load of music randomly. If you don’t believe me you tube his song with James Brown. Yes, that James Brown. Anyway, this song is an oldie but goodie.
Rihanna – Talk that Talk *** Sexy just like Rihanna. Could have done without the rap verse. Again. Singers need to nix the rappers!
T.I. f. Young Dro – I Do ***Dro sings his ass off on this song. And it’s too funny.
Joe Public – Live and Learn *** Yall remember this?
La Roux – I’m not your toy ***Elly Jackson is everything to me. We have the same birthday too!
Kanye West f. Pusha T, Big Sean and 2 Chainz – Mercy *** THEM BLUE DOLPHINS NEED TWO COFFINS
Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk *** This is a song for anyone who has ever struggled to quit anything. As someone with an addictive personality I always reach back to this song when I need to feel less alone with it. Plus, along with Terence Trent D’arby/Sananda Maitreya Rufus is my favorite singer.
So that sums up my music life right now. Feel free to let me know what you’re listening to. All this to say… I really miss Gucci Mane
